“A Sense of Place” is a collection of paintings that spans a period of over twenty five years. It is an idiom and a concept constituting a lens through which people experience and then make meaning of those experiences.
Artspace Hamra’s 2018 exhibition is affected by this conceptual lens. Twenty-four artists from the Middle East region explore the relation between being and the world through the lens of landscapes, interiors, and dreamscapes. As such, a sense of place is manifested through its knowledge of history, geography, and geology of an area and its legends. These counter-positional lenses that give a sense of place conjure contradicting emotions—luscious verdant play, a warmth of community and home, sometimes even fantasias, juxtaposed with the stress of dense urban living and even the distance and almost, at times complete disappearance of the actual place— by which a place influences hoartistic invention, impressions, memories, and public engagement interact with a place.
